About KAUS

Preserving Our Community

Kelvedon Against Urban Sprawl (KAUS) is a passionate, community-led group devoted to protecting the green fields, wildlife, and historic character that make Kelvedon and Feering truly special. Our beloved villages face a real threat from inappropriate development, including plans to build new homes on precious farmland that has shaped our landscape, heritage, and sense of home for generations.

We believe that growth should respect our countryside, wildlife, and history, not destroy it. KAUS exists to provide clear, trustworthy information, raise awareness of these threats, and give every resident the confidence to speak up, take action, and protect what they love.

This is about more than buildings — it’s about preserving the heart of our community, our heritage, and the natural beauty that inspires us every day. By standing together, staying informed, and acting now, we can ensure that Kelvedon and Feering remain thriving, vibrant, and full of life for today’s families and generations yet to come.

5000 more homes. 15,000+ New Residents. Approximately 32,000+ More Journeys per day.

Building 5,000 homes in a village like Kelvedon would trigger a near-total collapse of local services, effectively, over tripling the population from just over 5,200 to nearly 17,000 (population 5282 as of 2024). Adding over 32000 more journeys to already congested roads and the historic High Street would cause permanent gridlock, while the lack of schools and supermarkets would turn the area into a "commuter sprawl" where residents must drive elsewhere for every basic need. Specific impacts include:

  • Healthcare & Schools: Existing GP surgeries would fail under the weight of ~11,750 (avg. 2.35 per household) new residents, and with no secondary schools, thousands of children would be forced into long-distance daily commutes.

  • Historic Character: The heritage of Kelvedon’s listed buildings would be threatened by increased vibration and pollution from stalled traffic, while the "village feel" is replaced by massive urban pressure.

  • Infrastructure Lag: Without massive pre-funded investment, the area faces a decade-long deficit where housing outpaces the delivery of promised shops, clinics, and road improvements, fundamentally breaking the existing community structure.

A note

Cllr Paul Thorogood

Braintree District Council - Green Party Councillor for Kelvedon and Feering

Welcome to the official website of Kelvedon Against Urban Sprawl (KAUS). We are a community group dedicated to protecting the character, heritage, and environment of the parishes of Kelvedon and Feering from uncontrolled and unsustainable development. The villages are places where people know their neighbours, green spaces are valued, and local history is cherished. We believe that any future growth must be carefully planned, balanced, and respectful of the needs of residents today and for generations to come.

Our mission is simple: to ensure that development in and around Kelvedon and Feering is responsible, sustainable, and truly in the public interest. We aim to provide clear, factual information about proposed plans, highlight the potential impacts on transport, local services, and the environment, and give residents a platform to voice their concerns.

This website is your hub for updates, news, and resources related to planning and development in Kelvedon and Feering. Here, you will be able to find details about current proposals, past campaigns, and ways to get involved. We also provide guidance on how residents can participate in consultations and make their voices heard.

Kelvedon and Feering are more than just villages; they’re two distinct communities. By staying informed and engaged, we can help shape their future responsibly. Whether you’re a long-time resident or new to the area, we welcome your interest, support, and participation in our efforts to protect what makes Kelvedon and Feering special.

Together, we can ensure that growth does not come at the expense of the qualities we all value.

The only way forward.

Use your voice. Save our community.

Now is the time to stand up for our community. If we do nothing, the impact will be lasting — impossible levels of traffic on already stretched roads, irreversible damage to our countryside and wildlife, and thousands of new homes built without the schools, doctors, transport, or infrastructure our villages desperately need. These decisions will shape daily life in Kelvedon and Feering for generations to come.

By joining KAUS, signing up for updates, donating if you are able, and showing up to Braintree District Council meetings, you help ensure local voices are heard before it’s too late. Real change only happens when communities come together and refuse to be ignored. This is our home, our environment, and our future. Join KAUS today — speak up, stand with your neighbours, and help protect the place we all love.
